The BNP leader also alleged the "United States" had offered him money "to concentrate only on Islam, they wanted us to drop our criticism of the banking system. I refused, in 2007, and all hell broke loose."

This seems perfectly plausible to me, the financial services sector is far and away the largest donor to political parties in the UK (Tories and UKIP being the main beneficiaries).

Labour still gets a lot of money from trade unions (it's mainly ex-Prime Ministers who get lots of money from banks), which is fair enough, seeing as originally The Labour Party was the political wing of the trade union movement. Where this has gone horribly wrong is the fact that trade unions nowadays are mainly for public sector workers.

Nick goes a bit off-piste here though:

Griffin used his speech to plea for other far-right splinter groups to rejoin the BNP as well as espousing his theories about the English Defence League, calling the group "a serious, systematic, hugely-funded effort by the Zionist, neo-con clique, to dominate nationalism, to use as a tool to encourage the white working class to go and fight their wars, and so when the banking collapse comes, people will be looking for blame in the wrong direction."

It's quite true that the "neo-con clique" do spend a lot of money on this sort of thing, but I'd be surprised if the EDL receives a penny of it.

Being entirely fair, he did publish his own address, even though that was probably stupidity rather than an act of defiance

BNP leader Nick Griffin could lose Euro seat as party faces bankruptcy... He is among top officials thought to be personally liable for the racist group's £700,000 debts - which it admits it cannot pay.

The BNP's money woes were laid bare by ex-chief fundraiser James Dowson in a letter seen by the Mirror. Mr Dowson told North-East printers who produced its newsletter that the finances were like "a shipwreck.. Cash is in very short supply... [it is] impossible for the BNP and persons associated with it to pay outstanding bills in anything like a normal timescale, if indeed at all." The "very grave" crisis meant it could only pay 20% of what it owed, he added.

Its money problems have been made worse by having to settle a legal row after illegally using Marmite in an ad and the cost of fighting the Equality and Human Rights Commission over its whites-only admission rules. Meanwhile, electoral chiefs are still probing its 2008 accounts as they contain gaps that breach the law...

Nick Griffin: Brave or foolhardy?

There was a photo of Nick Griffin in today's Metro proudly holding his invitation to yesterday's 'garden party' - which can't have been much fun as it was raining yesterday afternoon in London.

What is surprising is that he is holding it so that his home address - Y'Gribin, Llanerfyl, Y Trallwng, Welshpool, SY21 0JQ - is clearly legible.

Yup. That'll teach them.

British National Party leader Nick Griffin was racially abused by a man who made threatening "gun gestures" towards him, a court heard today.

The North West MEP was giving evidence in the trial of 23-year-old Tauriq Khalid, from Burnley, who is accused of shouting "white bastards" towards Griffin and other BNP members who were demonstrating in the Lancashire town. As the far right leader gave media interviews outside Burnley police station last November, Khalid drove past and made the comment, returning shortly afterwards to make the gun gesture, Preston Crown Court was told.

The defendant denies one charge of using racially abusive threatening behaviour against Griffin. He admits he stopped his silver Vauxhall Astra at the scene but says he shouted "Nick Griffin, you f w " and the hand gesture was a V-sign.

At a press conference after being pelted with eggs, BNP leader Nick Griffin ranted "At least they could have separated out the whites first!"

On a related note, does anybody else fancy forming a group called "Unite against Unite Against Fascism"? As odious as the BNP might be, at least they're good for a laugh.
