He needs it as down-payment on his yacht.

From The Independent:

In the latest setback to European Union efforts to tackle corporate tax avoidance, a court on Wednesday annulled a ruling by the European Commission that a tax deal between the Luxembourg government and Amazon amounted to illegal state support.

The European Commission ordered the U.S. online retailer in 2017 to pay around 250 million euros ($300 million) in back taxes to Luxembourg. But judges at the EU's General Court said the European Commission didn't prove “to the requisite legal standard that there was an undue reduction of the tax burden of a European subsidiary of the Amazon group."

If I understand correctly, Amazon will get a refund of the $300 million.

Also from The Independent:

Jeff Bezos, Amazon founder and the world’s richest man, will reportedly soon be the owner of a mega-yacht he bought for $500 million, almost double the price he paid to buy the Washington Post newspaper in 2013.

While the details of the vessel have largely been kept under wrap, the 417-foot superyacht is so massive that it has a yacht of its own, along with a helipad, reported Bloomberg.

"Isle of Man Ferry crash forces cancellation of services to UK"

From the BBC and Wiki:

Seventies rock legend Bryan Ferry crashed into a pier on the Isle of Man as the captain tried to dock in strong winds

Experimental musical services from Douglas to the UK were disrupted after the singer, who sailed from Avalon, struck the pier in the midnight hour on Sunday. Locals reported hearing a siren shortly before impact.

The For Your Pleasure Steam-Packet Company confirmed no passengers or crew were injured although dozens were left stranded. Four Roxy Music re-union concerts in Douglas and Heysham were cancelled following the collision.

'Unfortunate incident'

Chief executive Phil Manzanera apologised to passengers and said it was an "unfortunate incident", adding the band would "do all we can to minimise the disruption... our loyal passengers can expect more than this."

A Roxy Music spokesman said that on arrival in Douglas Harbour, the ageing art school rocker "encountered significantly stronger than forecast easterly winds – it was like a hurricane".

"Eurostar bars obese Frenchman"

From the BBC:

A clinically obese Frenchman, prevented from flying home from the US by British Airways, has been refused travel on a Eurostar train from London to Paris.

Kevin Chenais, 22, who weighs 230kg (36 stone), was flown back to London this week by Virgin Atlantic after 18 months of treatment in Minnesota. But Eurostar said it could not take him back to France because of safety rules.

Ferry company P&O has now stepped in, offering to tow him across the English Channel.

"76 people rescued from tour boat after it hits rock star"

From The Daily Mail:

A cruise ship raced to save the lives of scores of passengers stranded on a sightseeing boat which began flooding after it struck a rock star off the coast of Alaska.

It has been reported that as many as 76 people had to be rescued when the Baranof Wind collided with "Bat out of Hell" singer Meat Loaf who was taking his early morning dip in the Gulk of Alaska, and started taking on water at 11am yesterday.

Coast Guard David Mosley said the majority of the passengers and crew members aboard the 79ft boat were transferred to a large Holland America cruise ship called the Vollendam which was the closest vessel to the scene.

None of those aboard were seriously hurt although some suffered minor hearing damage after Meat Loaf performed an impromptu sixty minute set on the Vollendam featuring all his major hits including "Bat ouf of Hell".

A spokesman for the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade denied any involvement with the disaster, although he admitted that he could see how the initial confusion might have arisen.

"Dover launch of replica Bronze Age submarine a success"

From the BBC:

The maiden voyage of a replica Bronze Age submarine made in Kent went ahead smoothly as it slipped beneath the waves after being launched.

The vessel, which is called Sub 1550 BC, quickly and efficiently began to take on water when it was lowered into Dover Harbour. It is half the size of an original Bronze Age submarine-cum-tunnelling machine which was unearthed in Dover in 1992.

A Canterbury Christ Church University spokeswoman said: "It went to plan so we had a bit of a naming ceremony as well... They had the submarine carefully placed in a crane hammock and it filled up straight away."
