Women in F1

I thought I'd write a little something about Stirling Moss' comments about women drivers in F1:-

Moss, 83, told BBC Radio 5 live: "I think they have the strength, but I don't know if they've got the mental aptitude to race hard, wheel-to-wheel."
But F1 hopeful Susie Wolff, 30, responded: "I completely disagree with him. It makes me cringe hearing that."
Italian Lella Lombardi was the most prolific female F1 driver, starting 12 races in the 1970s and scoring half a point.
Just to explain Lella Lombardi's achievement: she came 6th, in the 1975 Spanish Grand Prix, in a dreadful race where 5 spectators died, where the race was stopped before half distance, and with a total of 7 finishers, just ahead of a rookie in his first race in an F1 car. And that's it for the sum total of points for women in F1. Ever.

Susie Wolff, is someone who has raced for 7 seasons in touring cars in Germany and got a grand total of 4 points in that time. That is to say, finished 7th in 2 races out of around 100. She isn't an "F1 hopeful" on that track record. If she disagrees with him, perhaps she should produce some evidence to counter it.

Of course, what Moss did was to look at the facts, consider what wasn't causing it, and arrived at a conclusion based on what was left. It's just not a conclusion that fits with the feminist line, which means it's heretical. I'm not sure I entirely agree with his conclusion - I suspect it's that men are generally less risk averse than women, but unlike his critics, he has at least engaged with the facts.

He didn't even come to a conclusion, he said "I don't know". They only way Wolff could "completely disagree" with him is by disagreeing with the part that was a statement, ie. by disagreeing that women have the strength.

You might try and stretch this confusion into evidence one way or the other for the "mental aptitude" controversy, but I couldn't possibly comment.

I like the Daily Mash and Newsthump write ups of this.

I'm slightly amused that, in the one sport that is unashamedly macho and sexiest by its very nature, an ex-racing driver is admonished because he makes so-called sexiest comments.

In LL defence Robin Herd of March fame (she was driving a March 751 in the 1975 Spanish GP) reckons the car was a bit of nail at the time and that latterly they discovered some structural failures in it - from memory the engine to chassis mountings - which considering that the engine and gearbox were structural members and carried the rear suspension loads, was pretty critical. Also the DFV supplied to her was euphemistically 'down on power' - read in 'dire need of a rebuild'. March was always strapped for cash.

FWIW I've been in several races at the same time as Moss. In my early years he was in his 50's and I just watched as he cruised by me. Latterly in his 70's and 80's he was still ultra smooth, but slower, and I have overtaken him! Mind you his Osca is not a match for our Diva.

In re women in F1 - I just reckon that they have more sense than us blokes, and just do not see the point.

But there have been quick women, Cristobel Carlisle being a case in point.

Perhaps she should switch to Rallying - who can forget the sexy pairing of Michelle Mouton and Fabrizia Pon? 2 fit birds in racing overalls with a lancia. Michelle dipped out on the WRC by one point in the 80s.

She was beaten by Walter Rohrl, which is no disgrace at all.
