I just came across an old school textbook on international relations. It says, and I quote, "Most people born in Scotland think of themselves as Scottish or British. However, increasingly it is our European identity that is important. Many of the rules which govern our lives are now applied Europe-wide. We have rights and responsibilities which apply to us because of our European citizenship."
The book was published in 1997 - Labour were quick on the gun with that one. Makes a change.

You must be rather young.
Perhaps you should consult the texts of 1941 or so - much more robust.
Then it was Britain first and foremost.
Most Scots of my generation probably think of themselves as Scottish AND British. "or" is rather ambiguous in English. "Is that the Greek 'or'?" people used to ask, back in the days when education occurred.
I'm Scottish, nothing else. I've only one nationality and that's it.
