Yes, yes, I know that a zillion other 'bloggers have covered the bansturbatory element of this, but couldn't pubs wiggle their way out of this by having Unhappy Hours instead, giving us time to drown our sorrows on the way home from work (assuming that we've still got jobs to come home from)?

Richard Dodd, from the British Retail Consortium, told BBC Breakfast that supermarkets were being unfairly demonised.
"Supermarkets believe in responsible drinking too, and they do an enormous amount to achieve that, in terms of know-your-limits unit labelling and preventing underage purchases of alcohol, but there's an awful lot of nonsense talked about this idea of below-cost selling. Because, if you just stop and think about it for a minute, no business could survive - let alone thrive - if it was routinely selling large amounts of product at less than it was actually paying for it."

It's the government passing the buck again. Blame the supermarkets, blame the pubs, blame the bankers, etc. The amazing thing is that it seems to work as a strategy because nobody is going to break ranks and point the finger at themselves.

No disrespect to you personally, Philip, but Dominic Grieve isn't exactly untainted in all this bollocks.
Dominic Grieve is calling for "robust action to prevent loss-leader sales targeted at the young." and for a reversal of Labour's 24 hour drinking policy. I'd call that blaming the pubs and the supermarkets.
End the Educational Maintenance Allowance that gives £30 beer money for teenagers each week!
