Based on the little known musical of the same name, featuring music by pop-folk band The Proclaimers.

The film follows the stories of emotionally withdrawn Joel Barish (Jim Carey) and unrestrained free spirit Clementine Kruczynski (Kate Winslet) who live in  Edinburgh.

After a nasty fight in Afghanistan Clementine hires the New York City firm Lacuna, Inc. to erase all her memories. She then struggles to re-learn how to live a life outside the army and to deal with everyday issues like family, jobs and relationships.

Upon realising this, Joel is devastated and decides to undergo the memory erasure procedure himself, a process that takes place while he sleeps. His memories are slowly erased, with the last memory of Clementine telling him: "Meet me in Kandahar".
