Reader's letter of the day

From The Metro:

Monday's [gossip column] reported Holly Willoughby 'has revealed she is pregnant to millions of viewers'. Is that biologically possible? Lawrence Allwright, Cambs.

"At the end of the day, it's irritating"

A fine bit of pedantry over at The Metro.

Although John Humphreys doesn't seem to get the point of 'rice with chips'. Firstly it's delicious, secondly it means gay or bisexual, according to Roger's Profanisaurus.

A tritology?

The FT spoil this otherwise mildly interesting article on the Cern Large Hadron Collider with this:

...50,000 tonnes of equipment have to be cooled to just 1.8°Kelvin above absolute zero...

Wrong, wrong, wrong. "Kelvin", in this context, means "°C above absolute zero", which in turn is "the temperature at which nothing could be colder and no heat energy remains in a substance ... by definition, exactly 0 K and −273.15 °C."

So, expanding the above quote, we get:
...50,000 tonnes of equipment have to be cooled to just 1.8°°C above absolute zero above absolute zero...

The Pedant's Apprentice

If you're on the Interweb and a bit bored (a not unlikely combination), try doing a search on 'The Pedant's Apprentice', and look up some of the comments.

I have no idea whether there is just one person or maybe thousands using this alias, but the sheer number and accuracy of comments made by the person (or people) using that alias are absolutely astounding.

Pedant of the week (2)

I gave my 6-year old lad his pyjamas yesterday evening and said "Here's your pyjamas".

He gave me a look and retorted "Here are your pyjamas".

Weiss jemand warum das jetzt überall auf deutsch erscheint, und wie man es wieder auf englisch umstellen kann?

Update - you sign in, click customise, click dashboard and then re-set language to 'English-English' (which then shows up as just 'English'). I was just starting to get used to German as well.

Pedant of the week (1)

I have been awarded a "Pedant of the week" by The Remittance Man.
