Because I work for HMRC and we don't do that sort of thing. We might end up speaking to a taxpayer.

B, these help lines are more or less pointless, but when you could still actually speak to the tax district, that wasn't too bad.

At a time when every other organisation in the country either answered the phone or had some sort of answering service (the late nineties), I rang the Inland Revenue and found neither. The phone just rang until it cut off.

In HMRC's defence when I have to ring them up annually to get them to send my coding notice to my employer* they eventually do so.

* they tell me that on my records they deliver my coding notice to my employer via their e-service, but my employer does not use their e-service and everyone else's coding notices come by post.

BE, in the good old days, yes, but they went over to 0845 numbers over the last year, and you are doomed.
