I was tidying up my 'Desktop' yesterday evening and stumbled across these two images:
Geek points for the first person to spot whose blog that is. Either you recognise the 'Comment policy' or you can guess from the subject matter alluded to in the first comment.
Then there was this. To put it in perspective, total UK government spending (in cash terms) is about £700 billion. Remember also that a fair chunk of Tax Credits is indeed negative income tax (so amount to much the same as a higher personal allowance) or is nursery funding (and thus no more offensive than 'free' state schools the normal nursery vouchers and employer nursery vouchers which all parents are entitled to and which are worth much the same as the Childcare element of the tax credits); and that two-thirds of Housing benefit is not a cost to the taxpayer at all but a bookkeeping entry between DWP and local councils/housing associations:
