Good kitchen design

Note that the microwave isn't just plonked on the work surface, but is tucked away under a half-sized cupboard (second from the right). This saves valuable work surface area and, because it's at eye level, it's easier to check the contents. What's not to like?

Simples MW! When designing a kitchen, as I have done many times, all I have ever needed to do is talk to a myself!

PS: ditto ovens! Oh, they forgot!

WFW, there's an oven/hob to the left of the picture. Underneath the extractor thingy.

But its not at eye level??????

WFW, these eye level ovens are terribly in fashion nowadays, which means that the hob is nowhere near the oven which strikes me as completely unnatural.

Usually the old ways are best, like the rule that the sink is under a window and your need at least two units space between sink and oven, in which the kitchen shown has failed.

MW< Ah but eye level help those of advanced years, and those younger like you, from having to bend down.

Oven can be near hob, but one 600mm distance - might need a tad of extra plumbing, but hey....

Kitchen also fails in that regulatory distance twixt access to water and electricity not met! Also suspect there is a socket or two with reach too!

Never understood why the sink should be under a window a rule which causes some awful lash-ups in older houses with low window cills.
I, too put my microwave at eye level and quickly discovered that this makes it impossible to see into a bowl placed in the microwave unless your personal eye level is considerably higher than the eye level at which the microwave is fixed.

There isn't enough window area in that kitchen.

To me its unnatural to have the grill NOT at eye level and as the grill is built into the oven, that's the best place for it. Personal preference (how i'm doing mine when I get round to it) is to have the eye level oven, one cupboard unit width with bare worktop (space for oven tray to be put down) and then the hob above another standard width cupboard or drawer unit. I am also not a big fan of the sink under window thing. I wanna move mine to the thin back wall (long thin offshot kitchen on back of terrace - window & door on long wall with sink currently)

WFW, yes, in a way it's nice to have everything at eye level, apart from sink and cutlery drawer which you want at waist level. But some things have to be relegated to 'low down' or 'high up' or else you are wasting space.

B, that was just right for me and exactly eye level for average sized woman. That's what I call a compromise.

D, there is another window to the left of the picture and double French doors behind/to the left of the camera.

SW, OK, I'll give in on the 'eye level oven/grill' topic (see also my reply to WFW above re space) but 'sink under window' is more or less God's Law and not to be questioned by mere humans.

"Sink under the window rule" was so that 'er indoors had something interesting to look at whilst doing the washing up.
(Ducks and runs for cover)

VFTS, even as a bloke, I prefer being able to gaze out of the window while doing the washing up. No need for ducking or running for cover. Or do real blokes prefer staring at a brick wall?

Never really thought about it before. My kitchen sink is against a brick wall (well, granite splashback really) and my back is to the windows while I'm washing up. But I'm looking at the contents of the sink in order to wash them properly, so the lack of an outside view never occurred to me.

D, that bit puzzles me, when I'm doing the washing up I am looking down at what I am doing and not looking out of the window. But it still seems important to be able to do so.

What's not to like about the microwave neatly built into a kitchen cupboard carcass?

Water vapour, dear boy, water vapour........... :o)

Mark Wadsworth said...

FT, it's not built in to anything.

Two or three inches above it is a half sized cupboard and it's resting on a shelf with a couple of cunningly drilled holes along the back, all for ventilation.

My microwave is just above eye level and the oven below it (not directly in line of sight but a comfy 'usable level'. Hob nearby (double sink under window not in shot)

I'm reflected in the picture (just as well I'm dressed!)

Where's your Aga hidden?

SO, that looks quie cozy. I like the microwave/oven arrangement and I suppose having the hob somewhere else is just the (aesthetic) price you have to pay.

D, that's not my kitchen (although it once was).

Microwave arrangement is good. Exhaust is good also.
