"How to succeed in business - by Tesco"

Rantin' Rab, who knows more about supermarkets than most, posted this. I shall take the liberty of cutting and pasting the whole thing just in case he goes ahead with his threat to delete his whole 'blog:

Follow these handy tips in order to succeed in business, courtesy of Britain's favourite supermarket...

1) Set up a property development company.

2) Development company buys a struggling/failing town centre shopping parade/mall.

3) Ensure zero investment in shopping centre.

4) Ensure no leases are renewed for current tenants.

5) Evict current tenants for minor infringements on lease agreements.

6) Watch as shopping area rots away and blights the community it serves.

7) 'Purchase' the centre from the 'property development' company. (For the same amount as the development company paid). Announce plans for re-generation of the area with a new store.

8) Smile as you know the council is desperate for a knight in shining armour and all plans are passed with no problems.

9) Smile even more as local people and media praise Tesco.

10) When your cunning plan is discovered, ensure that you really don't give a flying f*** what people think.

Tesco, Every Little Helps.

It's called business.

Anon, no, it's called 'gaming the planning system'.

Cheers Mark.

If you haven't already read Tescopoly, I recommend it. It's a real eye opener.

SW, RR, I think that this is a nice simple real life article that illustrates exactly what Tesco are up to, without polemic or political bias, it tells us all we need to know.

You just have to multiply that example up by fifty or a hundred because this is what they do all over the country.

Quite. Well done Rab.

Tescopoly is very good. But it does not identify with clarity the central problem does it?

That if the institution of private property in land exists, then it is inevitable that capital will concentrate into the hands of the few and monopoly power will ALWAYS be the result. Abolish the institution and it will be exceedingly difficult for that power to arise short of slavery. There will be a Free Market!

I am not blaming capital. I am blaming monopoly power. Capitalism is not the perpetrator. Monopolism is.

We need to rescue the term capitalism. Not sure if you are aware but the 20th century monopolists did a great job funding socialism to make it look like capital was the problem. Maybe we are too late.

I'm sure they do it, but is it really wise of them?

Aren't they destroying the livelihood of their future clients?

When everyone in the area works for Tesco, then where will the money to pay for shopping come from?

It's like the public sector in microcosm -- there has to be wealth generation somewhere.

Quite! The public state and the private state are the same thing. Except one collects the rent for public purposes, the other private

The private state tends to do it far less efficiently than the public if that is even possible to imagine. But its true.

See how well banks manage the household for evidence if you are looking for infinite amounts of it.

Agreed. That's why I always say that 'land ownership is just privatised tax collection'.

Yup! My words are monopoly profits to the one, are a tax on everyone else. By coincidence Mr George said that too (:
