Apparently Prime Minister Gordon Brown suffered an embarrassing rebuff when he floated the prospect of a new tax worldwide, only to have it flatly and publicly rejected by the United States and other major financial players.

CFF, briliant. And Mr Flaherty said: "We are not in the business of raising taxes, we are in the business of lowering taxes in Canada. It is not an idea we would look at."

This is just another example of poor Gordon trying to appear important.

The meeting is taking part in the UK, so he feels he has to make a proposal. It doesn't really matter what it is provided he can spin it later as "a new idea" and pretend he is an original thinker.

He really is so far out of his depth it's embarrassing.

TFB, exactly. The merits and demerits of the 'Tobin tax' have been discussed to death (and actually introduced and scrapped again in some places) ever since it was first mooted, and it is quite clear that it is a truly awful tax that would cause a lot of damage and not raise much revenue, that's the dumbest part.

The Russian's comment was the best: "I am a sceptic on such taxes. Gordon Brown is known for always raising taxes."

The man is a joke... I almost spat at the screen when I heard Brown telling the media what we (the people) wanted.

Also, how does taxing the taxpayer's banking transactions (because it certainly won't be the banks money going to the treasury) prevent the taxpayer paying for any future bank rescues? Doh! And what happens if there aren't any bank failures in the near distant future, do we get our money back?

Tell you what though, lets give Gordon his scheme... under one condition: The money is ring fenced and can never be used by Government for ANY other purpose. Arghhh, see, bet he's not so keen on it then!
