Is it correct that there is excise duty and then VAT on top of the gross?

Mark Wadsworth said...: Yup. Fuel duty on unleaded petrol is 53.65 pence per litre on top of basic cost, then there's VAT at 17.5% on the whole lot.

This is not to be confused with taxes on North Sea oil and gas companies, the most important of which is the 20% corporation tax surcharge, i.e. they pay 48% corporation tax.; 29 August 2008 at 07:34
