November is the time to plant tulips.

There are two main schools of thought, either plant them on their side or plant them upright but with sharp sand immediately below the bulb.

Tulip bulbs have a basal plate - a ring on the base from which the roots grow - if the basal plate gets too wet the bulb perishes.

I have tried both methods but am yet to get a bulb to last for more than two years.

Here endeth the gardening lesson.
