Like a cow attack but smaller

When it comes to animal attacks, most people work on the assumption that the aggressor must necessarily be a predator, or at least an enraged dog.*

However, a paperboy from Utah recently learned (the hard way, one might add) that goats can also be pretty scary. Thus, Jaxon Gessel got attacked by an 18-month-old pet-Goat Who Must Not Be Named, which knocked him off his bike, tackled him and chased him up a tree.**

Interestingly enough, this 14-year-old boy did nothing to provoke The Dark Ruminant: he was simply riding around, making sure the Utah residents under his “jurisdiction” got their morning papers, sources explain.

* Or a cow, a bull or a calf.

** Presumably not a Whomping Willow.

Have you ever been attacked by an animal? Yes by a cow. I was in Cornwall, walking through a field on the way to the campsite we were staying on. I was carrying a duvet over my shoulder and this one cow went for me. It was charging at me and the only thing I could think to do was lie down. My mum started screaming: "Get up! What are you doing? It’s going to trample on you!"

The park service says Robert H. Boardman, of Port Angeles, was hurt Saturday as he hiked near Klahhane Ridge in Washington's Olympic National Parkand died hours later at a Port Angeles hospital.

Officials did not provide any specifics on the man's injuries, but said that an early investigation indicates they were the result of an encounter with a goat. Rangers tracked down and killed the animal, which will be analyzed by a veterinary pathologist.

On page 26 was another goat story, which I can only track down at the Irish Independent:

An argument over sacrificing goats during a Hindu festival triggered a stampede that killed 10 people yesterday in a packed temple in northern India.

More than 40,000 people, many inebriated, had taken their goats to the Tildiha village temple in Bihar state to offer sacrifice and prayers to the goddess Durga on the last day of the 10-day Navratri festival.

The district spokesman said some 30,000 goats were sacrificed at the temple on Saturday.

Hikers in the French Pyrnees are being warned to stay away from cows after a spate of attacks by angry bovines. At least two tourists have been seriously injured by cows in recent weeks.

One woman was left unconscious after being trampled by a herd as she tried to cross a field near Font-Romeu and a male walker was charged by a cow, sustaining cuts to his arms and head injuries. "The animal threw him to the ground violently and walked on him," the newspaper La Dépêche du Midi said.

Walker rushed to hospital after being hit by falling mountain goat... Hiker Walter Kaiser, 59, ended up in hospital after tumbling 50ft when he was hit by a falling mountain goat in Filzmoos, Austria. The goat was unhurt.

Rampaging Goat Puts Two OAPs In Hospital

The incident happened in Melbourne when a 64-year-old gardener tried to shoo the animal away from a bucket of weeds.

Police Constable Dianna Davidson said the goat, Billy, then "took exception" to the shooing and charged the man. When another resident moved in to help, he was flung onto his back and repeatedly butted by Billy. The "marauding" goat was then wrestled off the 69-year-old by police and detained until his owner arrived to take him home.

Both of the men suffered head injuries and were treated for suspected spinal injuries. They are in a stable condition in hospital. The wife of Billy's owner was the third person to be injured. She hurt her ankle while running for help.

Paramedic David Kervin said the injuries could have been more serious given that Billy had 6in (15cm) horns and weighed around 190lbs (86kg). "It was quite chaotic when we first got here. Luckily the police had subdued the goat quickly so we could get to the patients to assess them and help them," he said.

The attack may have been due to the goat trying to protect its territory.
