Unbeknownst to me, the government wanted to grant local councils the power to allow larger stores (that's the modern word for 'shops' despite being a complete misnomer - a store is what's in the warehouse FFS) to open longer than six hours (the current limit in England), but the government motion was defeated today.

Relaxing Sunday trading laws was of course one of John Major's many fine achievements. I remember peering out of my the front window of my flat to see if the Woolworth's up the road was really open on the first Sunday (it was, which cheered me up).

So that's this week's Fun Online Poll: is six hours 'about right', too long or not long enough?

(Ever the small 'c' conservative, I'm happy with the status quo of six hours. It's great for shopping, but shop workers need time with their families too and if I get dragged off shopping on a Sunday, I'd like to be home by six.

More bizarrely, the people who oppose this are a mix of hard-left Trade Unionists, hard-right Christians and the self-promoting SNP, who allow larger shops to open for ten hours on Sundays. Go figure.)

Fun Online Polls: Shaving & The US presidential race

The results to last week's poll were as follows:

The power of advertising: do you use a dry-electic shaver or disposables?

Dry/electric - 23%
Disposables - 28%
Both - 20%
Neither - 29%

One 'other' was cut-throat razor, fair enough. Roy said safety razor with replaceable blades, which I would count as disposables.

I asked the question because I was puzzled by the vast amount of advertising for disposable relative to advertising for dry/electric. It would appear that they know what they are doing, as more people use the former than the latter, so there's more to play for and people replace them more often.

Thanks to all 102 of you who took part and helped clear that up for me.

This whole US presidential election thingy is dragging on and on, it won't be over until November, at a cost of billions of dollars

So let's see if we can predict it for them for a minimum of hassle. This week we will choose a candidate from each party and next week we'll have the final round.

From yesterday's Metro:

So the Americans aren't happy about the Scottish government's release of Al Megrahi on compassionate grounds. This is even though he may be innocent of the Pan Am Flight 103 Lockerbie bombing in 1988.

There is also reluctance in Britain to hand over an English man who suffers from Asperger's syndrome to be [extradited and] tried for hacking into the Pentagon's computers.

Well, perhaps US diplomats based in London should settle the £3.5 million they owe in congestion charges. On the other hand, the British ambassador's staff in New York could refuse to pay tolls to pass in and out of Manhattan Island. They could smash through the barriers like scenes out of the A-Team and Police Squad and claim diplomatic immunity after the event.

Sorry, Mr Obama and Mrs Clinton, but I don't think the special relationship is quite so special any more. The end.

"Robed Obama picture ignites row"

Hillary's team have circulated a photo of Obama showing him in his true colours. Tee hee.

Obama's team point out that "Hillary Clinton has worn the traditional clothing of countries she has visited and had those photos published widely."

Great, so why not publish a photo of her in a Burka? No matter how strenuously she denies it, there's no way she'd be able to prove it wasn't her, is there?
