From The Metro:
Pope Benedict XVI has warned mankind will be 'groping in the darkness, unable to find the lightswitch' ahead of his traditional Easter Sunday Mass in Rome's St Peter's Square.
The head of the catholic church voiced his concerns during a vigil Mass on Saturday evening which was brought forward from its usual midnight start to try and keep the Vatican's electricity bills down.
Addressing those gathered in St Peter's Basilica, the Pope said:
"Life is stronger than death. Gas produces less carbon that coal. Good is stronger than evil. Nuclear energy can free us from relying on petro-states. Love is stronger than hate. Hydro-electricity is very economic if the geography is right. Truth is stronger than lies. The darkness that poses a real threat to mankind, after all, is the fact that he can see and investigate tangible material things when the lights are on, but not when they go out. He cannot see where the future of electricity generation is going or whence it comes, where our own life is going, what is a sensible contribution to future investment and what is fuel poverty.
"The darkness enshrouding a sharp corner of a piece of furniture is the real threat to our making it to the cupboard to find a torch and to the world in general. If the lessons of Michael Faraday and the difference between nuclear fusion and nuclear fission remain in darkness, then all other lights, that put such incredible technical feats within our reach, are not only progress but also in danger of going out, which put us and the world at risk.’
