I've always been fascinated by that statistic that 99 per cent of all the species that ever lived on earth are now extinct.
I suppose we shouldn't deliberately make a species extinct, but you can't really stop it in the big scheme of things.
There have also been several mass extinctions in the past when humans were not around, so even mass extinctions are ultimately not preventable.

What we see today is just a snapshot of life forms today. Go back a few million years, you'd barely recognise anything.
