A Bridget Jones Too Far

The film begins with a montage of archival film footage narrated by Bridget's mother (Gemma Jones) while preparing her yearly Turkey Curry Buffet in September 1944.  Bridget (Renée Zellweger) is ecstatic about her relationship with Mark Darcy (Colin Firth) but her advances are being slowed by overextended supply lines.

Bridget's confidence in her relationship is shattered when she observes Mark's withdrawal toward Germany. The Germans in the Netherlands have few resources in men or equipment and meet Bridget's ex, Daniel Cleaver (Hugh Grant), at her job for Sit-Up Britain.

U.S. General George S. Patton (Tom Cruise) and British Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery (John Hurt) are delighted to be asked by Mark to go to the "Law Council Dinner" but the night does not end well as they have competing plans for ending the war quickly. They have an argument and George walks away. Bernard goes to Bridget's apartment and tells her he loves her for the first time. Later in the night, Bernard asks Bridget if she'd like to go on a holiday sky-diving in The Netherlands.

Bridget and Bernard have lunch with both of their parents and her father, Supreme Allied Commander Dwight D. Eisenhower, chooses Montgomery's Operation Market Garden. When the subject comes up during conversation, Bridget is hurt by Bernard's comment that he envisions 35,000 men being flown 300 miles from air bases in England and being dropped as much as 64 miles behind enemy lines in the Netherlands.

Bridget decides to go with Shazzer (Sally Phillips) and Daniel to Thailand to film the largest airborne assault ever attempted,  with Lieutenant-General Frederick Browning saying, "We're going to lay a carpet, as it were, of airborne troops" and confidently suggests that "We shall walk out if a Thai prostitute arrives. "

Two divisions of U.S. paratroopers are responsible for packing for the trip home from Thailand, they put Shazzer's gift from a man named Jed (Paul Nicholls) in Bridget's bag.  A British division, under Major-General Urquhart (Sean Connery) is to land near Arnhem, and to arrest Bridget and send her to a Thai prison after airport security dogs recognize cocaine inside the gift.

Bridget recognises the prison immediately, having already spent several years there in the prequel A Bridget Jones On The River Kwai. Backed by Polish paratroopers under General Sosabowski (Gene Hackman), Bridget spends her time sharing relationship stories with the inmates and teaching them to push up the road to Arnhem, as quickly as possible.

After the Market Garden command briefing, General Sosabowski identifies Jed on a picture as the man who gave Shazzer the hidden cocaine. American commander General Gavin worries about Daniel not helping Bridget when she was arrested, and they start a fight outside a museum eight miles behind enemy lines.
