Health Scare Story Du Jour

From MSN News:

Bacon is now the second biggest contributor of salt to the UK diet after bread, according to a study.

Two rashers of bacon can contain more than half of the recommended daily amount (RDA) of 6g of salt, while some brands contain three times more salt than others from the same supermarket, the research by Consensus Action on Salt and Health (Cash) found.

The group said bacon contained "huge and unnecessarily high" amounts of salt, with consumers turning to it as a cheaper cut of meat as the recession squeezed family budgets.

Excellent news.

I was always a bit worried that I don't get enough salt, but it turns out that those two rashers of bacon I get with my all day breakfast at lunchtime will get me half way to the daily target.

How long before salt is sold only in plain containers which are hidden from display behind a barrier?

VFTS, I'll give it five years or so. Over-18s only.

I'm just waiting for the "Don't let your children swim in the sea" warnings.

Mch< well obviously. The sea has become "more acidic" and there are now sharks off the coast of England. It's all down to Global Warmening, y'know.

Well, we at El Reg have a pretty good idea how they'll react, and it involves inner cities burning and pig farmers wielding shotguns fighting off ravenous mobs of bacon lovers armed with knives, forks and frying pans ...."

Should keep Consensus Action on Salt and Health happy

VFTS, I'd heard those sob stories from farmers before (funny how the ones SELLING the expensive pig feed aren't complaining, isn't it?)according to that article, bacon is a "cheaper cut" so even if it goes up a bit, it'll be the last thing that disappears from our plates :-d

I wonder if all that research which backs the claim that too much salt gives you high blood pressure is as well-founded as that behind the dangers of second hand smoke.

Mark Wadsworth said...

B, i don't know about well-founded.

It's certainly as well-funded.

This ties in nicely with the warning from the rent-seekers in charge of the Royal College of Physicians that the NHS is due to be swamped by wrinklies living with chronic conditions.

All it takes is for every bansturbatory claim about food, drink and smoke to be ignored. We can then live to the age that is appropriate for our bodily systems as affected by our choice of consumptions.

Oh, woops, sorry. That would mean we live as we want to live and our lives will end in accordance with our choices. How foolish of me to think that any government might consider that a popular policy.

Mark Wadsworth said...

TFB, I suppose the perfect vice for the bansturbators to terrorise us with is something which is enjoyable and unhealthy but which makes you live longer while being "a burden on the NHS"

M,

No, it gets you to halfway to THEIR daily target, which has nothing whatsoever to do with either reality, or YOUR daily target of salt?

Mark Wadsworth said...

Ch, going by their recommended daily booze intake, i suspect their salt recommendations are a little on the low side. But the full English also includes a sausage, no doubt full of goodies like salt.
