"Segregated UK pubs toxic for poor"

From the BBC:

Pubs and clubs in the UK are segregated along class lines, creating a "toxic" effect for the poor, a publicans' leader says.

This was set to worsen as government "austerity policies" pushed more drinkers into poverty, British Beer & Pub Association head Dr Mary Bousted warned. Publicans alone were not responsible for poor drinkers' under achievement. The government said many pubs and working men's clubs had failed to address poor performance.

Dr Bousted said class remained a key determining factor in drinking habits. In her closing speech to her association's conference in Manchester, the BBPA general secretary described a social system "stratified on class lines".

"We have private members' clubs for the elite, wine bars for the middle class and working men's clubs for the working class. Too few establishments have mixed intakes where people can learn those intangible life skills of aspiration, effort and good taste from one another. The effect of unbalanced pub intake is toxic for the poorest and most dispossessed."

Dr Bousted hit out at ministers for holding pub landlords solely responsible for the drinking habits of the poor.

"If the poor don't drink such fancy French wines as the rich, it is the publican and his barmaids who are to blame. This, you and I know, is a nonsense. It is a lie which conveniently enables ministers to evade responsibility for the effects of their policies."

The left's whole idea is that putting bad apples in clean barrels will magically make them good, rather than ruin the whole barrel.

MW, I'm not sure what the angle on this spoof rewrite is. Do you think it's a good thing to have the quality of the school that you attend determined by your parents' income?

SB, that all depends.

Pat, calm down!

M, I'm not taking sides between the government and the teaching unions, they're as bad as each other.

As to your question, no. A pinch of shit spoils a bucket of porridge, it only takes a few bad pupils or one bad head teacher to ruin an otherwise good school; the vast majority of kids are quite happy to turn up and learn in whatever environment. Education vouchers will sort msot of that out.

Education always has been seen by the Left as their main battleground for fighting the Class War. That's what this is all about, not educating children.

B, to be fair, education is a battle ground for the Right as well, it's how they fight the class war. Like I say, they are as bad as each other and none of this has anything to do with educating children.

That's why I think we need to get the state out of providing for AND (taxing and) PAYING for education, just keep the state as it's traditional role of head basher for those that do not ensure an education for their children.

SB, steady on, I see no harm in earmarking some LVT receipts for education vouchers to level the playing field a bit (nothing says that the vouchers should cover the full cost of education, just the bare basics thereof). it's not a child's fault if his parents are poor, is it?

I prefer the parents obtaining loans as I dislike the politics of dysgenics.

Mixing the state with anything tends to make it want to control said activities in some way.

I prefer people to reproduce using the contents their own wallets.

Or to put it another way....

If it takes a village, you must ask the village for permission first...
