"Lorry collides with runaway cow on A9"

From Scottish TV:

A Highland road was closed after a lorry crashed into a cow which had escaped from a nearby field.

The A9 route was closed close to Alness after the crash at around 7.15am on Tuesday. The lorry driver escaped unhurt, but the cow was killed, following the accident. The road was partially closed for around 45 minutes while the scene was cleared.

Police said the accident caused congestion for commuter traffic travelling on the main Highland route. It is thought the cow had escaped from a nearby field and wandered onto the road.

Not much a story, really, and a lousy result for the bovines; one of them down and the road was only closed for three-quarters of an hour.

I suspect this was bovine suicide. A night in Alness might do that to anyone, let alone cows.

Best thing about it is the loop of the A9 which bypasses it completely. Oh, and the Dalmore distillery over the other side of the road.

Hope the farmer is well insured as he/she is responsible for keeping the cow in a secure place! A mate of mine did the same thing and was very lucky to be alive. He was on a motorbike. Ruined his front end completely. He reported the matter and the farmer was held responsible as the cow is classed as a domestic animal.
Another quirk of Scot's Law regards deer. These are not domestic animals. However the one that hits it can do nothing. But anyone following and coming across it may butcher it for the venison.
