She was just making an arse of herself on R4; nothing to say, as usual.
After spending a largely sleepless night watching the depressing coverage of rioting and looting it struck me that it might be worth checking Enoch Powell's gravestone this morning to see if the words "I told you so" have appeared yet.
FT, these were not in any way shape or form race riots, from what I could see it was black, white and Asians looting in perfect harmony with each other.
Robin, leave it out. Michael has made it perfectly clear that he thinks Ms T May is a bit useless, and to the extent that yesterday's lax policing is her responsibility, she certainly is.
I understand how you need to protect your blog commentators from denial. Yet you make a big issue about denial all the time here. See LVT 152 for evidence. That sounds like hypocrisy.
I am trying to protect all people from it.
To point out the smaller thieves, and not to point out the biggest thieves is as much a denial as denying it explicitly.
these were not in any way shape or form race riots
Didn't suggest they were. My question was based on what I saw on the BBC News coverage, which was exclusively people of non-Caucasian origin getting well stuck in. Backed up in a phone conversation with a friend living (and working) 50m from a burned out building in west London, whose premises were completely surrounded by people other than white, and who was terrified for his life.
Certainly not race riots, but a preponderance of those of other races involved - which is what Powell, E. warned of all those years ago. I was amongst those who regarded him as racist. I think I owe him an apology.
Told you so. As soon as we start getting fearful, we immediately blame those least able to defend themselves. The poorest and the least protected by the corrupt laws we vote for. Pretty cowardly.
Sometimes its called racism. Others anti immigration. Sometimes anti poverty. There is a preponderence of this on this blog.
Wisdom would truly ask: What is causing these people to riot in the first place. What is root cause. And have the courage to accept what we find is true.
But this blog seems to apologise a lot for the banking landlords and pin it on the small guys.
Come on folks. Start thinking. Stop letting the fear take you.
RS: "But this blog seems to apologise a lot for the banking landlords and pin it on the small guys."
Ho hum.
Fact is, the banking overlords only get away with it because the Home-Owner-Ist foot soldiers (yer average owner-occupiers) are greedy and short-sighted enough to keep voting for them.
As to these looters, I suspect that they were motivated by pure greed and absence of any sort of morals. So they're pretty much on a par with the rest of the Homeys, quangocrats and corporatists.
Yeah I agree on the daft voters. See 1 Samuel 8-12. The bible has told us this for millenia.
And I agree that people should not rebel. Crap government was put there by God because we are daft. We must obey them. See Romans 13, 1-7
You've also conveniently ignored the fact that Homeys rob more than the Starving. Klepto's more than Homeys. Oligarchs more than Kelpto's. Ruling Elite more than the Oli's. Along an exponential curve. So you cant say they are all equal in sin and keep me from laughing. Its called the wealth divide. Or perhaps the "theft divide"?
So what you may say. Dont forget, the marginal wage sets the wages of all above. So punish the poorest and set lower wages for yourself. More dumb protectionism. We should be trying to raise the lowest wages above starvation levels(I dont mean minimum wage!) That means asking why these smallest of robbers are compelled to break the law to rob. Something we have the luxury of avoiding.
Marginal wages are set today in a global market by the starving.
In Rome the slaves when under pressure used to grass up the sorrier slaves to save their own necks rather than their bailiff who had knicked all the surplus. Lets not follow them please. You know what happened to Rome.
The senior bankers steal upwards of £10 billion a year in salary and bonuses, these rioters steal a couple of hundred quid's worth of flat screen or trainers each. The fact that the economic and social damage caused by bankers outweighs the cost of replacing a few shop windows by millions-to-one does not excuse the latter - but it certainly puts the former in perspective.
And as it happens, in £-s-d, the biggest thieves of all are the taxpayer-funded corporatist sector, they get even more than the Home-Owner-Ist sector. And don't forget that most of the Home-Owner-Ist foot soliders pay more in income tax, VAT etc than they get given in 'free' services and tax-free capital gains.
Which is another reason why it'd be best if the government were funded with a really in-your-face tax like LVT, that way they wouldn't dare raise more money than was absolutely necessary to pay for core functions and a bit of social cohesion (i.e. welfare and pensions).
All theft might be theft (I don't agree as it happens) -- but all violence is violence, all arson is arson, and all intimidation is intimidation. But of course, if this violence, arson and terrorising of vulnerable people was going to make one iota of difference to whether the bankers continue to pay themselves millions, it might be capable of being justified.

Might decrease the housing benefit bill when house prices crash all over these places.
Steve_L Quite right.
MW indeed. "We must punish the perpetrators"
What, she means landowners and banks?
Rents(banks profits) are still rising, while wages fall precipitously by government policy.
Things have simply just got bad enough for the most poor. Yeah its wrong. But do not be surprised.
Amazing. She really really just does not get it. She is secretary of state for home affairs though. No idea. Only punishment.
Watch them soon start to blame those least able to defend themselves.
Ugly cow

formertory (me too)
Good idea. Its been on the tombstone of Henry George for 114.
The truth I have tried to show will not find easy acceptance. If that were possible, it would have been accepted long ago, and never obscured.
She's totally useless. Just going on TV to tell us what we already know - that criminals and thugs are engaging in criminal behaviour and thuggery.
Michael Fowke
True
But banksters and land owners have been doing this for centuries and we have not heard a peep from you about that.
How do you explain this sudden notice of theft.
@Robin Smith
Not quite sure what you're going on about. It's not my job to go around noticing theft. I'm just saying May is useless, that's all.
Michael Fowke
In your own words:
"to tell us what we already know - that criminals and thugs are engaging in criminal behaviour and thuggery"
You are making a judgement. I am asking why you are selecting the rioters for special treatment?
Apologies if that is not what you meant.
SL, maybe a buying opportunity?

Me too. Hence and why I link to his infamous speech in my Words of Wisdom so that people can read it for themselves.
It doesn't matter whether EP was right or not now. We have to make a go of our multiracial Britain.
That's why it is so important to dump the "multicultural society" drivel and start trying to get everyone integrated into a cultural melting pot.
start trying to get everyone integrated into a cultural melting pot.
I wish you luck with that one. "Melting Macht Frei", anyone?
I link to his infamous speech in my Words of Wisdom
MW, hadn't realised that. It's many years since I last read it and it's become no less prescient.
For a "protester's" viewpoint, I found this
this interesting. And absolutely bloody enraging.
The result of the State neutralising moral hazard for the past several generations.
FT, we really have no choice. Unless you want to start deporting millions who were born here.

PS what does "ho hum" mean?
RS, theft is theft.
The senior bankers steal upwards of £10 billion a year in salary and bonuses, these rioters steal a couple of hundred quid's worth of flat screen or trainers each. Agreed. All theft is a sin.
Wages is Wages too. And the rent robbed from the workers puts it all in perspective.
Its mighty strange that one kind of theft is not illegal in Roman law and is OK(but still a sin).
But another that is illegal takes all the heat and punishment.
CharlieB
Please define theft in clear terms then? And then show how all theft is not theft. Try to use wisdom rather than intellect to make your case.
Dont get your second point. Are you saying effects make causes happen?
We voted for the bankers. All we need to do is stop voting for them.
