It's all a bit odd, isn't it? Do you really have to declare cash you bring into the US? We got rid of such requirements in the UK 30 years ago!

Just checked - you do have to declare any amount over 10,000 euros(!) on entering the UK.

But the potential penalty is only a fine, not imprisonment.

It's an international anti-money-laundering regulation which lots of countries have agreed on. The amount varies a bit from one country to another but it's usually around the 10,000 USD mark. They won't actually stop you taking more in. They just take a dim view if you don't declare it all. Particularly in the USA.
