You've got to hand it to the Lib-Cons when it comes to trying new stuff: their cunning wheeze to end drug dependency is to just ask addicts to stop taking them.
I wonder if there's any point asking the government to legalise them instead?

I have no expereince of drug addiction (though I've known a few who have).
I can though talk about alcohol. One of the AAs main messages is that to become an Ex-alcoholic you must foreswear all alcohol forever; not even a little drinky on your birthday or at Xmas.
Contemplating total abstinence was one of the scareiest things I thought about when considering changing my bad ways.
In my own case I found that this was not necessary and can now drink in moderation ( plus the odd binge) without re-sinking into alcohol hell.
I'm not saying that this approach would work for all but what I would say to Dave&Nick is that advising drug addicts that they face a totally drug free future may well put some off from trying at all.
On a more positive note, perhaps the coalition might stop the common practise of requiring addicts to all turn up at their GPs practise at the same time (often early monday am) to collect their meth and benzo prescriptions. GPs do this so as not to scare off the normal people since junkies often have poor interpersonal skills but what it also does is force those who might be contemplating giving up into the company of those who don't want them to, often their suppliers.
