NIMBY Alert...

Not only will it "swamp local villages" the proposed new 'town' near Ipswich, Suffolk will "overwhelm ... sensitive wildlife habitats" and "exacerbate climate change" according to the list of objections on the No Adastral New Town NIMBY website.

From Google Maps. Waldringfield is to the south west on the banks of the river:

Of course, NANT is "is not opposed to house building" and "very much welcomes this attempt to create new jobs" but, nevertheless, is adamant that none of the above should happen in their 'backyard'.

Hah! I know the place very well indeed - I used to work for an outfit based on the nearby trading estate.

This is the site of the BT Research department built in the late 60's early 70's. The housing to the West of the proposal is all new, being built on the old Martlesham Heath RAF base.

The really annoying thing is that this site is being converted from wealth creating semi-industrial use to wealth destroying home-owner-ist use. With the excellent local communications (the A12 is Ok-ish) and the proximity to Felixstowe and the available pool of high skilled individuals one would have hoped that suitable 'high-tech' industies would base themselves there.

Oh, one other comment, the land is aflat as areseholes, so high rise would be a bit unsightly, but there again the existing BT building is high - and jolly unsightly. It looks a set from a low budget Dr Who episode.

SL, I have taken the liberty of adding a map, Those Are The Rules.

Oi, I'm on that map - can you see me waving?

L, I can see a house with a big garden and what appears to be five or six old bangers parked on it. Is that you?

I feel we are in for a bumper period of true NIMBYs, with the extention to the proposed High Speed Line being announced today and Tory MP's up in arms about the proposed route slicing through the Chilterns. Good days ahead I feel!

MW - House and Large garden, yes. Old bangers, no.

WB, indeed. The money's run out, so the only way that they have left to prop up their house prices is to freeze new development of anything that might conceivably benefit anybody else.

L, maybe the picture was taken when your daughters were round to visit?

Mark, Agree with you totally. We live on the coast close to a coal fired power station, recently they have asked for planning permission to extend and build. We did not oppose as it will bring much needed jobs to the area. However, when a local developer wanted to build houses close to us we did object, not because of being NIMBY's but because the local services could not support it e.g. Drainage, water pressure etc. As soon as the developers changed the plans to include improvements to these services we agreed to the plans. I dont see why some of these people dont look at the bigger picture and see that some of these developments with actually benefit them!

WB, you are not the first to point out that NIMBYism is nowhere near as rampant in Wales as it is in England. I'm sure there's a difference.

Thanks for adding map MW, will make mental note to learn how to embed maps on blogger.

My Aunt alerted me to this one, she's very upset about it and is thinking about moving in case it goes ahead.

Her daughter, a newly qualified teacher is distraught that even starter flats in the area cost 6 times or more her income.

Sl, it's not an embedded map - I just did a screen shot and pasted it in :-) Nice to see a bit of inter-generational conflict going on there.

The amusing thing to me is that a lot of the objectors live in Martlesham Heath (as do I) which as Lola points out was itself a large new village developed in the 70s on the old Martlesham Heath air base. The local pub is called the 'Douglas Bader' after one of its more famous officers. I had a NANT activist around just a few days ago asking for signatures on a petition. I declined saying that I was not against the development in principle (though concerned at some details like traffic management) He seemed quite aghast and just walked off without trying to engage in debate.

Used to live in Ipswich proper many moons ago and all i can say is that martlesham is a prime site for a development next to the BT site as there is plenty of open space for it, if they move companies in there Martlesham and surrounding areas will be laughing for jobs I used to work in Bury St Edmunds, so it may well give the area a boost unless I've missed something
