There was a bit of to do when the new Doctor Who, now played by Matt Smith, regenerated, looked at himself in a mirror* and observed "I’m still not ginger."**
The BBC are currently re-running the Doctor Who episodes featuring his predecessor, David Tennant, which I am duly recording on the old Tivo box. I watched the very first episode again yesterday (available on iPlayer until 18 September), and one of the questions that the (then) new Doctor asked about his new personae was "Am I ginger?".
This episode was first broadcast five years ago, so I think Matt Smith's quip might have set a new world record for delay between 'joke' and 'punchline'.
* Or however he established what he looked like.
**I am unashamedly ginger and wasn't offended in the slightest, of course. His new assistant more than compensates for that.

I was sure that I read somewhere the reasoning behind it is that The Doctor actually WANTS TO BE a ginger.
I love the ginger ladies. His assistant is totally stunning.
Could it, bearing in mind the proclivities of some of those involved with the program, be an "in joke" based upon the rhyming slang "ginger beer"? :-)
SW, maybe.
RR, she is.
P, that is quite possible. Doctor Who is all in-jokes and self-referential stuff, most of which goes over my head.
