From the BBC:
... some fear it could lead to people going to neighbouring counties to buy cheap alcohol in bulk."
Well, duh.
And who's this bunch of shysters...
Andy Walker, of wellbeing and health organisation Our Life, said he hoped a by-law in Greater Manchester would be passed and create a "domino effect" nationally.?
I'd never heard of them before. From their website:
We passionately believe that people have a fundamental right to better wellbeing and health. We also think that local citizens and local communities should have more say over the decisions that affect their lifestyle choices.
But what if 'local citizens and local communities... have their say' and decide they don't want minimum alcohol pricing? Have you even considered that possibility, Mr Walker?
PS, the website looks distinctly fakecharity, but it does not mention a charity number, neither does it have a companies house number (so it is not necessarily a fakeprivatecompany either). Apparently, it was " Set up in 2009 as an independent, campaigning social enterprise by NHS North West, Our Life is a membership organisation..." so I assume it's basically a lobbying front for somebody or other or a slush fund or something.

Quite. I want more say over whether Andy Walker is hanged. In public.
"We passionately believe...": no evidence required then?
Nothing new here MW, Oldham Council were trying to Impose it on Tesco a while back.
Then this happened to their head of licensing.
Or for all the juicy detail here
Sorry I can't get the pdf download thing to work!
"Quite. I want more say over whether Andy Walker is hanged. In public."
I think there could be quite a groundswell of approval for that!
From their website (about us):
"As a charitable community benefit society..."
What's one of those?
BFOD, JM, if you're going to do public hangings, can I auction off the tickets and sell the hot dog pitches? The revolution will be self-financing!
D, nope. What's "evidence" anyway?
SL, tee hee.
Anon, I'm f***ed if I know. They are not registered as a charity AFAICS.
Let me see, the govt encourages drinking by allowing Pubs to stay open 24 hours if they want to, Police no longer arrest and prosecute drunks, instead they give them a lift home.
Where do we friggin start on them getting it completely wrong.
Unruly teenagers - better parenting.
Foster community spirit - get rid of the smoking ban and make booze cheaper.
Simple.
Our Life have been doing this for a while. In the Manchester Evening News in October 2009, there was a story containing this:
SUPERMARKETS are fuelling the toll of booze misery across Greater Manchester by selling alcohol at 'pocket money prices', a report reveals.
Beer and cider are as cheap as cans of coke at some of the region's leading stores and drink is on sale for as little as 14p a unit, according to the report from alcohol awareness campaigners, Our Life, out today.
The pressure group, which sent mystery shoppers into nine chains across the north west, is blaming 'irresponsible' supermarket promotions for contributing to a huge rise in alcohol related illness and crime and calling for the government to place a minimum price on booze.
I've kept an eye on the organisation since then and as far as I can tell, its just an NHS front, which seems to do nothing other than pre-emptively call for something that the Greater Manchester local authorities are already planning to do, or offer them support after they've made the announcement.
