Some Revealing News from the Real World

I am not Mark Wadsworth

For various reasons that I won't detain you with we need some more admin help. We have an excellent young mum that works for us on two full days a week, and whom (as you will read below) really would love to do an extra day. Needless to say the Byzantine benefits and tax trap starts to kick in. Read and weep.

Hi ya, been doing some investingating regarding child care etc if I was to work the extra 5 hours on a wednesday. W's nursery has the space for him and would charge me an extra £30 per week for him (I already pay £30 a week for him on a Friday).

I have spoken to Inland Revenue, and based on my increased income I wouldnt get a lot of help with my child care costs! They would contribute £20 a week towards the £60 that I would pay.

What I was getting has already decreased apparantly because a slight increase in ***** wages has tipped me over the threshold for help. Where they were paying around £20 towards my current £30 a week cost, I'll now get £10 towards that (£20 if it increases to £60 a week) If I earn £630 a month (current £455 + possible additional £150 from [a] Wednesday['s]) I will be paying out £240 of that in child care - meaning i'm taking home £390 a month and potentially receiving an extra £80 a month from inland revenue in child care benefits, meaning I will "earn" £470 a month. So from working that extra wednesday i'll only be £15 better off a month!

With my current hours i'm already lo[o]sing £80 a month in child care but i'm earning something so i have to swallow that, but its not going to be worth it for me if I only end up earning an extra £15 a month from the extra time on a wednesday. Its rubbish, really gutted because I was hoping to be at least £100 better off a month if I could do these extra hours but I'll
have to turn it down I think ******.

I could possibly go to my sister for help with W but it would be a lot more hassle for me and not as solid as a nursery would be. I dont want to be a pain when you've got so much on your plate at the moment. If you can think of any ways around this I'll be open to suggestions, i'd like to be able to help you guys and get more involved with the work and of course earn some extra cash but its a real tough one for me.

Anyway, I thought I'd email you now rather than waiting to talk to you ***** as it gives you a bit of time to mull it over.

See you *****, thank you.*****

So, other than paying her cash in hand what can be done?

Any ideas - not excluding shooting the Government.

I'm assuming this young mum has a partner (it doesn't state young single mum) which means, if she is already doing 16 hrs but her wages combined with her partners put's her over the limit for 100% claim back of child care costs, any further hours will just increase her child care costs and reduce her wages.

Mummy x

p.s That's why, as a single Mum of 3 it has been impossible for me to find a job that will either fit around the Squids (not many jobs give you 14 weeks holdiday a year) or will earn me enough to cover the child care costs (£150 a week term time, £250 for holidays).

Lie, pay cash in hand and get on with it.

Work the extra day - you obviously enjoy the work and 15 quid is better than nothing. When your child goes to school and you no longer need to pay child care costs you will then really feel the benefit of working the extra hours.

Screw it...let's just move straight to shooting Governments...it'll save time ;-)

Er - it's worse. I think she forgot income tax, national insurance and loss of child tax credits. She'll almost certainly end up actually worse off working the extra hours.
