OTC, it wasn't 'now' though, was it? From Wiki:
On 8 February 2010, he was convicted at the Southwark Crown Court on charges of perverting the course of justice and of misconduct in a public office, and jailed for four years.
He had been suspended on full pay since September 2008 and on 31 March 2010 was formally dismissed from the Metropolitan Police.
If it had been done on 9th Feb, they might have gotcaway with the 'immediate' bit.
What took them nearly two months? Did they have to wait and see if he appealed?
It took that long to check through all the equality employment legislation with ACAS. ;-)
