From The Metro:
A judge told Munir Hussain he was wrong to take the law into his own hands by attacking Walid Salem, as he jailed him for two-and-a-half years. Salem – who has 54 previous convictions – escaped jail with a two-year supervision order...

Oh, it was a pretty fierce debate on this over at 'Harry's Place' the other day. The news about the 50 convictions raised a few eyebrows even there.
The fact that the judge went easy on Salim (yet again) due to the injuries he sustained just put the icing on the cake...
We've been discussing it at my place, too. I've adopted the unpopular - but legally correct position. Ahem...
It is legally correct, it's true. It's just a pity that we can expect to see more such cases, unless the justice system is taken by the scruff of the neck and given a damn good shake.
And a whack on the nose with a rolled up newspaper for good measure...
I have no argument with that point at all.
From the Times:
The judge told them: “If persons were permitted to take the law into their own hands and inflict their own instant and violent punishment on an apprehended offender rather than letting justice take its course, then the rule of law and our system of criminal justice, which are the hallmarks of a civilised society, would collapse.”
A society, and its criminal justice system, which leaves someone with over 50 convictions alive and free to terrorise a family in their own home is not civilised. Welcome to the place where Great Britain used to be.
One rule for one ...
If they'd only had the sense to cut his hands off and then claim it as an expression of multiculturalism.
