From The Metro:
The British National Party will amend its constitution so its rules on membership do not discriminate on the grounds of race or religion, a court was told. The Equality and Human Rights Commission issued County Court proceedings against the far-right party on August 24 after voicing concerns its membership criteria were restrictive to those within certain ethnic groups.
Robin Allen QC, counsel for the Commission, said party leader Nick Griffin had agreed to present party members with a revised constitution at its general meeting next month and that the party had agreed not to accept any new members until the new constitution was in place.
In an order issued at the Central London County Court, the BNP agreed to use "all reasonable endeavours" to revise its constitution so it did not discriminate on what are termed "protected characteristics" in clause four of the Equality Bill*. These include race, gender and religious belief**.
John Wadham, of the Equality and Human Rights Commission, said: "We are pleased the party has conceded this case and agreed to all of the Commission requirements. Political parties, like any other organisation, are obliged to respect the law and not discriminate against people. It is unfortunate the BNP spent several months before conceding and dealing properly with our legal requirements. We will be monitoring the BNP's compliance with this court order on membership, and its other legal obligations, including to its constituents."
* Ahem. It appears that it is indeed still a Bill, that means a draft law thich has not yet been enacted/given Royal Assent. Ergo, it's not the law, ergo nobody needs to comply with it. Twats.
** I wasn't aware that the BNP didn't allow women to become members, although I can imagine them harbouring prejudices against transexuals. And isn't "sexual orientation" missing from that list?

Huh?
Why did they do it then?
Mr Curious,
Why did they do it then?
Timing. I can't remember where I read it recently, but someone's column predicted that the BNP would do this just before their question time appearance.
As if a whole truck load of ethnic minorities are now going to queue to join the BNP.
Actually, you never know, if they swamped it they could effectively shut it down.
It would be hilarious to watch their party conferences.
I believe they have already stated that if the were indeed swamped they would simply disband and start over as something else.
Harriet Harmans specific anti BNP legislation won't mean a lot if they just rebrand and become a new party.
wifflebammer
A bit like Vlaams Blok being banned or something in Belgium and they just rebranded as Vlaams Belang?
Hmmnn...
Very strange. Aiming for the mainstream perhaps?
Perhaps they've done a bit of market research and found the racist label is the big problem.
The leaders then use the threat of legislation to push through something many of the membership wouldn't like but the leadership know its what is needed to get bigger?
Mr C, I think OC has nailed it.
TV, "truckload"? Thou are hereby banished to Re-education Camp.
WB, Mr C, exactly. Isn't the BNP more or less the successor party to the NF?
NC, that ain't gonna happen either.
I had seen it many time. but can't understand that why did they do it.
So what will the new constitution say? How about: "anyone can join as long as they accept that white skinheads are suprior"? Seriously though I'll bet they leave this alone because ...
I also think there is something into the QT issue. Nick Griffin can deflect the obvious criticisms and turn to policies. Very clever, because......
Rearrange the following in to a well know phrase or saying :
"hoist, Labour, their, by, petard, own"
This is going to be fun - I almost have some sympthay for Jack Straw.
TGS, I can only assume it will say "anybody is welcome to join provided they campaign for some people to be kicked out of the country".
Anyboday watch QT last night? At the end of the programme Dimbleby mentioned Nick Griffin appearing on next week;s programme, and a few audience members booed. Then Dimbleby announced that Jacqui Smith would be on the following week and she got a bigger "Boo!" than Nick Griffin.
So it's official. Jacqui Smith more unpopular than a bigoted racist.
The 's guest is going to be a black woman & the Tory's will be an asian woman. If the LibDems do the same Griffin & Straw will be the only white panelists whush may not be as damaging to the BNP cause as our political class clearly expect.
By not accepting new members are they now using marketing savvy to create the illusion of scarcity?
When asked, I tell everyone I'll vote BNP (which I won't) and after the apopletic reaction I ask them to substantiate their claim that I shouldn't. They never can.
And it's very easy to dismantle BNP policy on it's socialism alone.
"And it's very easy to dismantle BNP policy on it's socialism alone"
Indeed, but I think you can be confident that that discussion will never be started on QT and that Baroness Warsi - who should raise it, she claims to be a "Conservative" - will keep the debate concentrated on racial not economic politics.
Seriously, this should be an open goal for the Conservatives: they can damn the BNP for racialism and socialism. Unfortunately, the Conservatives ape our England footballers by failing to score in penalty shoot-outs and then crying all the way back home.
