Drumming up a bit of business

Every organisation likes to advertise the actual or perceived benefits of its products or services, This advertising is obviously for the benefit of the business rather than its customers, but so be it.

So when a State-funded organisation like Barnados*, that makes its money by taking children into care, says it would like more children to be taken into care, is there any reason to believe a word of it?

(That's even without going into the rather more terrifying idea that The State decides on where children should live etc.)

* The P&L on page 12 of the 2008 accounts shows income of £119,247,000 for "fees and services" out of total income of £175,190,000. On page 3 they brazenly state that they "... aim to increase the amount of income generated from statutory sourcesby 4.5% in 2008/9, contributing to the 16% growth target for 2007-10 and increasing the proportion of expenditure funded from statutory sources. "
