Lib Dems to adopt UKIP's policy

From the BBC:

The Liberal Democrats have said they want to cut the amount of income tax paid by most workers by £700 a year. The party proposes raising the threshold at which people start paying to £10,000, with all those earning less than £100,000 paying less.

They aren't the first to nick this idea either (hypocrites that they are, none of their MPs signed up to that EDM, of course).

It's a shame that they didn't also propose scrapping higher rate tax, as in the original proposal, but hey, it's a welcome start ...

Yes but when UKIP proposed it, the policy was a nasty right wing extremist policy. Now the Lib Dems have copied the idea, it is a sensible inoffensive policy.

To be fair, Mark, raising the threshold above the National Minimum Wage level was one of the aspirational policies to come out of our Tax Commission process three years ago. I suppose they've chosen to announce it publicly as policy because of people suffering more from the tax burden at a time of economic crisis, but don't know for sure.

The problem is that it is sleight of hand to produce a tax cut without cuting taxes overall. In fact the increase to 45p may raise nothing after increased admin costs & more tax avoidance. If the LDs really want smaller government the only way to do it is to make government smaller.
