This pine cone appeared in the middle of our patio overnight. A couple of the 'scales' had been pulled off and were lying near it.
Our back garden is pretty big, there are no pine trees for at least fifty yards and the wind was not particularly strong last night, so I can only assume that a squirrel dumped it. But look at the size of the thing - it's about six inches long and it weighed in at seven ounces. Can squirrels really carry things like that?

are you sure you did not run over next doors tortoise?
You'd be surprised.
I guess if they are motivated, they can. Perhaps you should put out some nuts for it, incase it decides to break in and rifle through your fridge instead? ;)
PB, I asked them whether they had a tortoise and they said no. It disappeared a couple of days ago.
JM, we've got one those bird feeder thingies with nuts. Perhaps that's why the squirrel lost interest?
The squirrels steal our hazelnuts but bring us walnuts in exchange.
Attack of the giant pine cones. Careful, Mark.
You're supposed to shoot it if it's a grey squirrel, aren't you? Nasty bloody things - I once had to carry one safely ensconced in a cage trap and it was some scary, I don't mind admitting. About 10 ounces of unbridled, insane fury.
I was just glad it didn't have a Nokia handy to throw.
aye, they could shift that without any great problems. They also are quite tasty marinated in Tika spice mix& yogurt, then grilled on the BBQ.
So thats what Gordon Brown's only brain cell looked like! By the way has anyone told him that he's lost it?
