"Ryanair withdraws 30% of planes from Stansted"

Obviously those slots at Stansted can't be worth very much, otherwise Ryanair would be doing a BMI.

This is chucklesome: Last month, Mr O'Leary [Ryanair boss] said that high oil prices would drive “crappy competitors” out of the airline business.

And why are the slots at STN (which is a super little airport, acres of marble and glass) worth so much less than at LHR or LGW? The answer is, there's no direct train from London or Stratford to STN, you have to take a coach (cheap but stressful) or a taxi (expensive).

Well there is a train from Liverpool Street in the vague direction of STN. However, the last time I used it (and believe me it will be the last time I use it) it was disgustingly filthy (I'm told this is par for the course) and reminded me of the state of the "crouchers" offered as public lavatories in rural France in the 50s. What "Standard" class must have been like I shudder to think.

The train was certainly a bit dirty, but definitely went from Liverpool Street to Stansted Airport.

"Stansted". And there is a London train as the chaps say, and a train to Cambridge and on to the Midlands - wherever they may be.
