"HSBC loses customers' data disc"

Oops! I have often pointed out that banks etc. seem to manage to avoid this sort of thing happening, so why can't the government? There goes that argument, I suppose.

Question - will HSBC's knee jerk response to its 370,000 customers be that this is a good reason to introduce ID cards? Methinks not.

Can't say I'm surprised. I'm unfortunate enough to have an account with HSBC and their crass incompetence, and abysmal idea of 'customer service', never cease to amaze me.

Would swap banks but have tried most of the others over the years and find very little between them.

I'm sure it happens with banks all the time but there are two important differences. Firstly, the bank picks up the cheque for any fraud on its customers' accounts, encouraging data security. Secondly, you can change banks on a whim but you're stuck with the government.

Brilliant! I must remember that one and pretend that I thought it up.
