I'm surprised that Tim Worstall fell for this, although to his credit he has made a prompt retraction, bearing in mind that this appears to be a rather more accurate statement.

I guess we just all so much wanted to believe that a politico would risk ripostes.
"Falling for it" would be a little over the top.
Knowing about it but keeping a straight face might be closer to the truth.
