The whole 'forcing-kids-to-stay-at-school-until-they-are-eighteen' is of course complete f***wittery of the highest ordure, but these idiots are tearing great holes in it before it's even started ...
There'll be exemptions for...
- homelessness
- health problems, physical or mental
- addiction
- post-natal recovery
- caring responsibilities
- learning difficulty where support is not yet in place
... which just about covers all the teenagers who neither stay on and do A-levels nor go and get themselves a job at 16, doesn't it? So the whole policy, as f***witted as it is, is not even intended to achieve anything at all!

It also looksa like a list of those whose unemployed status is already covered by something else. I remain convinced this is nothing but a cynical scheme designed to massage the youth unemplyment numbers favourably.
RM, no, never. No Govt would ever stoop so low. Next you'll be saying that raising the age to 16 in 1972 was another ploy to keep the unemployment numnbers down.
Mark,
We could solve 2 problems with one fell swoop of the axe at a few necks - save us some stress levels and reduce CO2 levels by a considerable amount.
