I can't honestly say, from the comfort of my Safe European Home, that I agree with what he is thought to have stood for, but he certainly had principles.
And with the benefit of hindsight, might things not have turned out better had he not been forced out of office?

That last comment seems rather wide of the mark. AFAIK neither Smith nor Mugabe set up gulags, concentration camps, and gas chambers.
On the other hand I find it ironic that Britain forced Smith out in the name of equal rights for all races only to hand power over to someone who has tyrannised all races with equal vigor. White Zimbabweans have been progressively stripped of their rights while black Zimbabweans are being slowly reduced to such a state of starving penury that many have had to flee Zimbabwe to survive.
