Southern England is sinking at a rate of about an inch a year I believe, so to taking that into account, this recent high tide is below the 1953 one.
It's only a couple of millimetres a year, actually.
But your point is perfectly valid - this storm surge was nowhere near as bad as in 1953.
According to the first series of Coast its an inch, but i suspect thats an average of the north going up and the south going down.
