On the way home, half an hour ago, I took two bottles of Italian white wine @ £2.99 each to the checkout in the Turkish Food Centre.
The lass at the checkout rang up £5.98 and then told me that they were three for a fiver. So I took another one and saved 98p!
Go figure.

Presumably the cost of disposing of that bottle according to EU regulations is 98p or more.
You certainly need to carry a pocket calculator with you round the stores, x
LT, they had a big metal basket marked "three for a fiver" which I shunned (I am not that tight fisted) and thought I'd go up-market and splash out £2.99 each for two bottles.
But it was the same stuff.
I think that that degree of price elasticity might just be there to give the punter some other kind of pricing signal...
And no, I don't think that this wine is likely to qualify as a Giffen Good...
BTW: Mark - can you drop me a mail, there's a good chap:

I hope they're good. I usually can't be happy with anything less than 12 bucks (US $) a bottle.
But you're closer to Italy than I am, so I think maybe you'd get more bang for your buck or £ in your case.
I am in Spain and buy reasonably good wine for a little less than an Euro per liter.
You have a TFC too?
Arent they fab
I like Turkish shops round my way on the whole. They are clean, not too expensive and relatively friendly. TFC especially. This may not apply to other parts of London!
Obviously shelf space has more utility* than bottles of wine for your freindly Turk.
Now if you can work out the marginal value between empty shelf space and plonk you might make a killing. On the other hand you may just end up with half the ingredients for a massive cheese and wine party.
*Damn! I'm starting to sound like that Worstall chap :-)
