Trump and Li'l Kim show how it's done.

From the BBC:

A summit between Donald Trump and the North Korean leader Kim Jong-un ended without agreement after the US refused North Korean demands for sanctions relief, the US president has said.

Yup, both sides make demands unacceptable to the other, that's it, call the whole thing off, no hard feelings and better luck next time.

Trump and Li'l Kim have thereby achieved more in two-and-a-half days than the EU and Theresa May have achieved in two-and-a-half years of grinding pettiness, without all the associated loss of goodwill.

That's because, with May and the EU, it's all about saving face. With Trump and Kim, one doesn't care and the other doesn't need to.

B, our PM and the various interchangeable EU chaps have lost more face than they ever had to start with.

Mark W ,

Stacey Dooley (who I had never heard of before) comes across as a misguided patronising celeb .

However , I still can't see how in the world you find her comment "pretty racist" .

Mike W

It is ironic that Idris Elba should highlight the disconnect between TV and real life to Parliament - an organisation and collection of members so disconnected from real life and ordinary people themselves .

Maybe our MP's have more in common with the celebs on TV or in TV melodramas ?

Str, her riposte sounds like "Go back to Africa!" Hence racist. David Lammy is not from there any more than she is.

Mark, it would be more accurate to say that she misinterpreted Lammy's comment as being racist. "David, is the issue with me being white? (Genuine question)... ". No the issue is with you being European, with European, first world values and prejudices, you virtue signaller.

All "aid" is racist, anyway. We are encouraged to give and we enjoy doing so, but if we, white people, end up on the receiving end, then what a howl there is! Aid is for brown-skinned people.

B, fair points.

As per usual, I'm swimming agsinst both tides. I'm in favour of UBI for UK citizens and against most "aid" payments to abroad.

Mark, state charity no longer registers as charity in people's minds, as can be seen when it is considered OK for people to be on benefits, but not for them to be going to food banks and collecting privately donated charity, so you are all right with UBI. Also, we both know that the vast majority of aid that goes abroad is simply a hidden subsidy to British industry and that is why it is done.

B, it shouldn't be left to private charities to uphold basic human rights!

For sure, "aid" is largely a bung, it's upwards redistribution, something else I'm against.
