I'm not a fan of property porn but Channel 5 did an excellent prog the other evening about "Impossible Builds" (a bit of a misnomer as they manifestly aren't) and featured a modular house, built in Invergordon, and then trucked to site in Assynt in the north-west corner of Scotland - a place I know well. The house looked absolutely superb in those surroundings. Quite science-fictiony, in fact.
JH, pre-fab houses can be as horrible or as nice as anything else. In Germany, I saw a pre-fab villa in proper Alpen pastiche style being assembled ready to move in within about a week.
TBH, this meme about getting down housing costs by getting down construction costs has been doing the rounds for decades. So how come they don't just do it? Why has it never been tried?
DCB, possibly.
FT, yes, that song hits the spot :-)
B, that's a useful thought experiment. Clearly, you wouldn't want your home blowing away across the North Sea, so you would have to anchor it somewhere. So land owners will charge you mooring fees to anchor it in a desirable area.
A floating house? Sounds great - when Corbad and McDonut royally f**k up the UK economy and demand I pay for it, I can can just float off somewhere warm and sunny with my [hard earned savings/ill-gotten gains]*

Sounds so wonderful I might emigrate.
BBC- Is this the solution to the UK's housing problem?
Everybody anywhere: No
****s
Don't worry; they aren't intended for the proles. They'll end up being used to spoil some countryside in an episode of Grand Designs.
I was irresistibly but unfortunately reminded of Little Boxes by Pete Seeger.

"Now all they need is some land..."
Or you could attach helium balloons to them.
