Each side of this building is in a different postcode district*

* Or more accurately, the west side is in WC2, the north side is in W1, the east side is in WC2 (again) and the south side is in SW1.

Mrs Wandsworth: Mark... Mark why can't you just admit we have been walking around in circles for the last hour? Don't pretend you have a sudden interest in Victorian street planning with me! Now where the fuck is John lewis?

L, true.

MW, Mrs W knows perfectly well where John Lewis is :-(

This photo-shoot serves to illustrate how odd London is, even the well-known bits.
One evening I listened to one of the lost rivers of London rushing along under a drain cover outside a pub.Does anyone know where this was?
I lost a shoe later on.

DBC Reed,

Nope don't know the river.Something that runs into the Dart then into the Thames?If you were in South London?

I shall keep my eye open for the shoe on my local canal. I assume it is a brown one, not a superior black leather one we have all been reading about in our social/shoe moblity discussions?:)

MW:)

@MW
Definitely North London, south of the river not being my thing, except along the South bank itself.(Don't most of the lost rivers get lost on the north side?)
The shoe was black, as are most of my shoes ( except brothel creepers and winkle-pickers). The circumstances of disappearance were suspicious.

It could have been outside the Water Rats or maybe the Daisy Trotwood if it was the Fleet. Possibly a pub on the Marylebone Road where the Tyburn stream flows - it regularly floods thte basement of a girls' school in the district.

London (like probably most large towns) is riddled with underground streams and rivers, they are shown on some maps. So lost shoe could be anywhere.

Bingo. Your reference to the Fleet has done the trick: if you Google "Fleet under drain cover" or some such , you get youtube video of the Fleet gurgling away under the Coach and Horses, Ray Street, Clerkenwell. This was the place. Though it now appears to be closed.I have, however, put the shoe, which I suspect was stolen in transit after my buying a new pair earlier, very much down to experience.It doesn't do to dwell. What kind of low life steals ONE shoe for fuck sake?
