... been replacing the rotten bits of wood on this bench with new ones. Took me four hours, it did:
The little lass and I made the executive decision to rebuild the table using alternative old/new or dark/light slats.

I like the silvery grey colour of weathered wood. Your bench could end up like Trigger's broom.
"Took me four hours, it did"
Proper five-minute job, then.
Had the power saw out myself, I did.
AKH, yes, I did think about that.
B, no, it was always going to be a three hour job. I was fairly pleased with four.
JH, do you really have a power saw? Very modern!
Certainly more productive than my Saturday - blowing the head gasket on the race car. Twice....
power tools are well worth hiring (I'm sceptical about buying many apart from a drill). I hired a thing for cutting through concrete for a weekend once and had finished with it in about 15 minutes. It went through about 4" of reinforced concrete like butter.
Without wishing to be rude are you sure that you couldn't have earned the cost of a new one in 4 hours?
L, sorry to hear that
TS, correct!
LF,yes of course but where's the fun in that? Gardening is inherently pointless!
Not always. I love having a pond and I also grow fruit which cannot be bought white currants, gooseberries (not the tasteless invicta that supermarkets sell), rare varieties of apples.
Also hopefully by growing gooseberries and currants organically I hope that I am providing a food for

MW Gardening is a 'recreation'. Hence not pointless as such. I, I should point out, don't like gardening. What I do like is arguably genuinely pointless - driving fast in circles...
LF, exactly, you do it for "fun"
L, you know perfectly well what I mean- it's pointless in narrow terms of value of fruit grown divided by time spent.
"it's pointless in narrow terms of value of fruit grown divided by time spent."
Ah, but how do you put a value on the pleasure a gardener gets from a well-tended flower garden?
Its nice to see you've started to tidy the place up a bit. Keep it up.
B, exactly, but it was LF who raised the topic.
RS, how very dare you - when you last visited we were still renting so we didn't give a shit, now we've bought it we have to try and make it nice.
