Between December 2011 and December 2012, the number of people employed in the public sector fell by 313,000 and the number of people employed in the private sector increased by 904,000, though these figures are distorted by almost 200,000 further education and sixth form college lecturers and teachers who are now counted as private-sector workers.
More detail in the actual ONS bulletin.
There are plenty of other examples of this happening recently, the DWP's Wheelchairuserfynder General rôle was given to ATOS who promptly sub-contracted it back to the NHS and so on.

Wasn't it said that about 250,000 of the change was done by reclassifying government workers as "private" quango employees.
If so it looks like the fall in government workers (increased by 2 million by Labour) is really almost non-existent?
NC, yes the ONS have gleefully highlighted 200,000 reclassifieds, although how many more there are we do not know, 50,000 seems like a fair guess for the time being.
