Fun Online Polls: Royal Wedding and the AV referendum

The responses to last week's Fun Online Poll were as follows:

If you were in London this week, which of the following would you attend:

None of the [below] - 99 votes
Royal Wedding celebrations - 52 votes
The EDL counter demonstration - 33 votes
Peter Tatchell's counter-counter-demonstration - 10 votes
Other, please specify - 14 votes
The Islamist demonstration - 4 votes

Well, I hope you all had an enjoyable day doing whatever it was you were doing, you certainly had the weather for it, all these events seem to have gone without any major hitches.

For my part, I stayed in bed and watched "The Right Stuff" on the Freeview recorder, then I flicked through the channels until I found something non-wedding related. The next advert was for a Sainsbury's three-cases-of-beer* for £20 offer at which stage I scrambled in the car to whizz round to my nearest Sainsbury's to snap up six of the last few cases (it was restricted to six cases per customer per visit).

* One case = 15 x 440 ml cans.

And lo, to this week's Fun Online Poll.

I am firmly in the Yes 2 AV camp. They've run an appalling campaign, but so what? It's better than FPTP and that is the end of that AFAIAC. I'm hardly the Lib Dems' biggest fan, but the argument that AV helps them doesn't wash with me, because by any objective standard, FPTP is unfairly stacked against them - more to the point, AV will hurt Labour and the Tories far more than it will help the Lib Dems, so overall, the LibLabConsensus will be weakened, however slightly.

Clearly, I've not convinced many people, and what saddens me are the people who say they'll vote FPTP in protest because AV is a cop-out and they'd prefer full PR. But out of interest, how are you going to vote?

Well you’ve convinced me about AV and I’m a cynic. AV may indeed be a cop-out, but what swings it for me is an extremely rare chance to flag the present system as broken. Voting no to AV or abstaining (my original intention) is just too feeble.

The yes have run a terrible campaign - I've had two no leaflets and caught a number of their political broadcasts but nothing from yes.

The key winner for no is that generally people stick with the devil they know, even if the devil they don't know is significantly nicer.

One thing that gets me is the assertion from the no campaign that under FPTP every vote counts equally. Well as far as I can see every vote might be *counted* but those that back the highest polling candidate get 100% of their requested representation, those that back someone else get 0% of their requested representation. From this it is clear that PR is the only system that gives every voter 100% of their requested representation (normalised to national opinion). AV doesn't do this but it "hears" more opinions than FPTP and is hence the better system in my view.

AKH, yes of course AV is a cop-out, but it's a Tory cop-out, not a Lib Dem cop-out. So all things being equal, better to give the Tories (and Labour) a kicking rather than play along with their game.

DNAse, we did get a leaflet from Yes2AV, which was nice and simple, although it peddled the myth that it will reduce corruption etc. Bollocks to that, it does what it says on the tin, AV allows you to cast a conscience vote, a comedy vote and a compromise vote and leave the ballot box knowing you have fulfilled your democratic duty.

I would have attended the Islamist demonstration - if only to set fire to a few beards, they just look so untidy.

Am I being cruel?

I'm torn between how to vote on it. Because:

1) To not vote at all is a cowards vote in a democracy
2) To vote NO is silly because it is better probably than FPTP
3) To vote YES is a self indulgent cop out. AV means you still do not have to think about what is socially better for all people

Islamist demo because they are the weak being punished by the hysterical, ignorant and selfish, when we should be going after the vested rights and powerful interests.
