I blame the parents

Most of the people in the IRA were members of "old IRA families". Since there were never more than about 300 "soldiers" it is clear that even in its heyday the IRA was more like the Mafia than the Resistance.

You have captured the benevolence of St Nicholas in his youth, Mark. Ok, maybe not.

Did you see what Gerry Adams snr looked like? "Lookist" I know, but who could deny that the guy would have been a serious contender in a Mr Poison Dwarf contest. No wonder the Adams children are peculiar. We already know that one is a murderer and another, apparently, rapes his children. Any news on the other eight?

Never a truer word. Merry Christmas, Mark.

He has always come across to me as a dark, humourless, authoritarian, and my view is unchanged. I suppose if I was a leftie socialist I would now feel pity and empathy, but I'm not, so I don't.

Have a good Christmas Mark.

Gerry Adams is a man of considerable intelligence and personal courage, unlike McGuiness who is just a mindless thug. He could have made a success of many things, and an important contribution to the peace and prosperity of his community which, God knows, was and is in need of it. Instead, as neil craig puts it, he took the easy route, joined the family mafia, and wasted his gifts sowing hatred and violence, ignorance and poverty, in the name of a religion he certainly does not believe in, and a cause he very probably doesn't care about. Long may he rot.

But there's a gentle rain outside, a warm fire and in the distance you can just make out the patter of reindeer hooves, so Merry Christmas to all those who deserve it.
