I've always thought that Sir paddy was a bit of a fool.
We should, of course, get the £130,00
AND the second homes allowance.
Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but don't MPs have to pay for things out of their salaries like the cost of running the constituency office and shouldn't these be funded by the state? Then we could really see how their pay compared to others.
Anyway, there was no shortage of people wanting to be MPs in the days when they were paid nothing. The fact "that the current MP's salary was "so low in absolute and relative terms" that members of the professional and business classes would be deterred from entering Parliament" could be seen as good thing. If they are deterred by taking a drop in salary, then their heart isn't really in it, is it.

We have a huge civil service doing very little - perhaps their offices could be run by these people instead, after suitable retraining?
It'll mean that Lucinda and Gareth and their peers can't get cushy temp positions as summer staff, and their mothers don't get a chance to get on the payroll, but hey, we all have to make sacrifices...
Poor pollies - we're all down on them.
